About Online Reading Tutoring

Do you work with first graders who are struggling with reading?

Yes. As a reading specialist and former first-grade teacher, I specialize in helping first graders who need additional support. I provide personalized online reading tutoring that builds strong phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension skills so children can become confident readers.

What grade levels do you work with?

I work with students in kindergarten through sixth grade who need help learning to read or strengthening foundational reading skills.

Although my website name highlights first grade, I specialize in early reading instruction for K–6 students, including older children who have gaps in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, or comprehension. First grade is the year most children learn to read, which is why early intervention is so important — but it’s never too late to build strong reading foundations!

I provide structured, evidence-based reading tutoring focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Each lesson is personalized after assessing your child’s current skills, so we can target exactly what they need to become a confident, capable reader.

I have worked with:

- Kindergarten students learning to read

- First graders building phonics and fluency

- Second through sixth graders closing reading gaps

- Struggling readers who need foundational support

My goal is to meet your child where they are and help them grow step by step.

What is the Science of Reading and how do you use it?

The Science of Reading is a large body of research about how children’s brains learn to read. I use this research to guide every lesson so your child is taught in a way that is proven to work.

My instruction is:

Systematic and explicit, meaning skills are taught in a clear, step-by-step sequence

Targeted, focusing on the exact areas your child needs most

Structured, so progress builds steadily instead of jumping around

Lessons may focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension — the core skills that strong readers need. I'll use our assessment data to guide our plan.

This approach helps struggling readers close gaps, build confidence, and develop lasting reading skills.

What reading programs or instructional methods do you use?

I use structured, research-based instructional methods aligned with the Science of Reading to support your child’s reading development.

This may include trusted evidence-based resources such as UFLI Foundations and Heggerty to develop strong phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and overall reading skills.

All instruction is personalized based on your child’s individual needs, and resources are used as part of live, one-on-one teaching sessions.

How soon will my child improve in reading?

Every child grows at their own pace, but many families notice early signs of progress within the first few weeks — especially increased confidence and smoother reading.

Meaningful growth takes time. Strong reading skills are built through consistent, structured practice over several months. My goal isn’t quick tricks, but lasting progress that helps your child feel capable and successful.

Progress depends on several factors, including your child’s starting point, attendance, and practice outside of sessions.

I monitor growth closely and share regular updates so you can clearly see how your child is improving.

Each session is structured, supportive, and designed to build confidence while keeping learning engaging.

A typical session may include:

- Targeted phonemic awareness practice if needed

- Review of previously learned skills to strengthen retention

- Clear, step-by-step instruction of a new skill

- Guided reading practice to apply learning in real text

Every session is personalized based on your child’s needs and progress, so instruction is always focused and purposeful.

Do you tutor children with dyslexia or other reading difficulties?

Yes. My instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading and is effective for children with a wide range of reading challenges, including dyslexia.

I use explicit, structured, and multisensory teaching methods that support how struggling readers learn best. Many families seek tutoring because their child needs a clearer, more systematic approach to reading.

My role is educational, not diagnostic. I provide targeted instruction to strengthen foundational reading skills and help children build confidence and progress.

Why online tutoring instead of in person?

Online tutoring allows me to deliver the same structured, high-quality instruction as in-person sessions — with added flexibility for families.

Students use interactive tools, guided practice, and evidence-based reading strategies in a fully personalized one-on-one format. Sessions are designed to keep children engaged while targeting exactly what they need to grow as readers.

Families also save travel time and scheduling stress. Your child can log in from home in a calm, familiar environment, which often helps students focus and feel more comfortable.

All that’s needed is a quiet space and a device with internet access.

FAQ image

Do you offer trial sessions or assessments?

Yes. I offer a complimentary initial reading assessment and parent consultation that takes about one hour.

The assessment provides a clear starting point by identifying your child’s strengths and areas of need. This gives us a clear picture of your child’s needs and helps guide the best next steps.

The goal is to understand your child and determine the best next step together.

How do you track my child's progress?

Progress monitoring is individualized based on your child’s needs identified during the assessment. I track growth in the specific skill areas we are actively teaching — which may include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, or comprehension.

I conduct regular progress checks at least every two weeks to ensure instruction stays targeted and effective.

For continuing students, I provide a complimentary reading assessment and parent consultation every twelve (12) weeks to measure growth and guide next steps.

Progress is shared with parents in clear, practical terms so you always understand how your child is improving.
